South Korea has elected its first woman president, Park Geun-hye, in a closely fought election. Taking the presidency by a narrow 3.5 percent margin, the conservative Saenuri party’s Park will be moving back into the presidential house she called home as a young girl.
Park’s father was Park Chung-hee, a polarizing figure in Korean politics who pushed South Korea into being an economic powerhouse at the cost of individual freedoms. With authoritarian cruelty, he tortured dissenters and rewrote the nation’s constitution to bolster his own power in the 1960s. His strongman tactics earned him many worshipers and many critics, a national turmoil that his daughter was able to witness firsthand. You could say Park was groomed for her presidential ascent, given that she became the acting First Lady after her mother was murdered in 1974, and continued to be engaged in Korea’s political realm after her father was assassinated five years later.
Park will be coming into power at a time when many citizens are worried about the country’s future. The cornerstone of Park’s campaign was economic reform, a promise she will have to make good on in the coming term.
We can only hope her zest for the economy doesn’t eclipse the desperate need for gender equity in a still very patriarchal South Korea. She has a unique opportunity to use the legitimacy her pedigree lends her to transform South Korea into a more egalitarian society. The World Economic Forum ranked South Korea 108th in gender parity, putting it one slot below the United Arab Emirates. On average, women earn 40 percent less than men, hold only 12 percent of managerial positions at 1,500 major firms and fill only 15 percent of the seats in parliament.
In her run, Park pledged to ignite a women’s revolution if she was elected, promising financial aid for childcare and incentives for firms to hire more women. Now that she has made history by winning the presidency, let’s hope her campaign promises weren’t just political pandering.

Tory Burch recently denied that her company would have an initial public offering in the near future.
But investors told Women's Wear Daily that suitors are lining up to take her company public, and that the fashion community views her brand as the next Michael Kors.
The only thing holding Burch back from going public is her lawsuit with ex-husband Christopher Burch.
She says that his new line, C. Wonder, shamelessly copies hers, while he says that he advised her line to begin with.
"If Kors was sold as the next Coach, Tory Burch is seen in the investment community as the next Kors. And there are plenty of suitors lining up to buy a stake and bankers ready to take the company public," reports WWD.
Michael Kors had a blockbuster year. Many fashion insiders believe that the brand, which is especially revered for its handbags and watches, will overtake Coach.
Tory Burch's legal case is the only factor adding uncertainty to her brand, which is valued at $2 billion. The case is expected to go to court sometime in 2013.

Actress and awesome feminist Ashley Judd is seriously considering running for Senate, Politico reports today. In the last few weeks, she has met with New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand, presumably to get advice, and has started conducting opposition research on herself to find out where she’s vulnerable to attack. Luckily her family has never done anything embarrassing!
Politico‘s report says that Judd is mulling a 2014 run against long-time Republican senator Mitch McConnell. But McConnell is the Senate minority leader, which makes him a major power, and he’d be tough to defeat. So Judd may decide to wait until 2016 to run, when she could take on freshman senator Rand Paul.
Judd has been developing her interest in politics for years now. She earned a Master’s degree in public administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School in 2010, and she has been outspoken about issues including global poverty, women’s health and education, and the treatment of animals. This year she served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for Tennessee.
Still, she is also a celebrity and the star of many silly movies. So it’s easy to imagine how both opponents and media would attack her if she ran. Al Franken was the last true celebrity to run for Senate; he won his seat in 2008. And celebrities have made headway in other offices: Sonny Bono served as a congressman, and Arnold Schwarzenegger was the governor of California. Heck, Ronald Reagan was an actor before he ran for president.
But it’s much rarer for female celebrities to make this leap. Shirley Temple ran unsuccessfully for congress, and was then appointed an ambassador to the UN, and later ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. A one-time stage actress named Helen Gahagan Douglas ran successfully for Congress in 1944. And as far as I can tell, that’s pretty much it. (If I missed anyone, let me know in the comments.) So if Judd does run, it will be interesting to compare the media coverage and public reaction with the campaigns of male celebrities. Will she be taken seriously as a candidate? Should she be taken seriously as a candidate? And what does this mean for the future of Someone Like You 2???

Anna Wintour, the most powerful woman in the fashion industry, is on the short list to be a U.S. ambassador to Great Britain or France. The news, confirmed by ABC News, was first reported by Bloomberg News’ Hans Nichols, who said Wintour, 63, is among a handful of top Obama financiers interested in the posts.
There were rumors of this new job for Anna back in the summer, but a source close to her said she had no desire to take the job. But in the last two years, we have seen a lot of political involvement by the current Editor in Chief of Vogue. She has attended high-profile White House events, including two state dinners, one of them during David Cameron’s visit in April. She serves on the President’s committee on the arts and humanities and has held Democratic party fundraising events at her New York home.
Anna also put together Runway to Win to help President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign. She and Vogue has helped round up 22 designers — includingMarc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, and Rachel Roy — to design items to benefit the Obama Victory Fund
Last November it was revealed that she is one of the biggest fund-raisers for the Obama Administration and has collected more than $500,000. Wintour, Gwyneth Paltrow and designer Tom Ford hosted a $15,000-per-plate fundraiser for Obama in London Sept. 19. She also co-hosted a $40,000-per-plate fundraising dinner at the New York City home of actress Sarah Jessica Parker in June and a $35,800-a-head event at Harvey Weinstein’s in August. Obama attended both events.
According to New York Magazine, those big spenders get to apply for a job with the current administration before anyone else. But according to ABC, Obama has spoken out against the influence of special interests inside the executive branch, criticizing those who had “turned our government into a game only they can afford to play.” However, many of Obama’s 2008 campaign financiers received prestigious appointments and exclusive access.
Vogue spokeswoman Megan Salt would not confirm whether Wintour has been approached about a diplomatic job, or whether she’d consider it. She told ABC News that Wintour is “very happy with her current job.”
But if you think this is some easy, cush job that just requires schmoozing well then you are probably the same person that being the editor of Vogue just means going to cool parties all the time. A state department spokesman told The Observer: ”An ambassador serves at the pleasure of the president. It’s a designation of the most qualified person. But it would be erroneous to think of London as a nice, cushy, westernized post. This is a key strategic ally, so you’re going to want a very seasoned person, be it on the economic or diplomatic side of things.”
If she takes this job, I think it is only 10 years before she officially rules the world.

As you may know, there’s been some talk floating around that Anna Wintour may be up for a US ambassadorship, either to France or to her native UK. Many people think she’s under qualified for the job because running a fashion magazine is a stupid girl job, while Anna herself has said via her reps that she’s “very happy” at Vogue. Which is a shame, because I think it would be a great move for both Anna herself and America in general. Here are seven reasons Anna Wintour should be a US ambassador.

The jury’s still out on whether Lindsay Lohan‘s flick Liz And Dick will herald a comeback for the actress (for a Lifetime movie, I thought it was pretty fun!) but it seems that playing the often-married Elizabeth Taylor has given Lindsay a new, wise, spin on relationships. Rihanna, are you listening?
In an interview in the December 3rd issue of US Weekly, Lindsay opens up about her troubled relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson:
I was bold enough to say, ‘Yeah, I like a girl. And?’ That put her in a situation where she was being attacked every day. That’s not fair. And what am I left with? Heartbreak.
She continued:
I needed to love myself first before I could be with anyone. And I was going through a lot. Two toxic people cannot be together. End of story. We’re friends now. That’s how it started, so I think that’s what’s meant to be.
Pretty legit advice from the girl with too many arrests, rehab stays and legal battles to recount in one blog post. I remember the ongoing drama with Samantha Ronson and it sounds like Lindsay finally has some perspective on this important (if dysfunctional) relationship. Recognizing that you need to value yourself before you can be with someone else is one of the truisms of love; I hope Lindsay is finally on a path out of her years upon years of self-destructive behavior.
And the part about toxic people who shouldn’t be together? Rihanna (who is rumored to be back together with the man who abused her, Chris Brown) could most likely take a page out of La Lohan’s book. Listen, Rhi Rhi, sometimes love is not enough: toxic + toxic = a world-class catastrophe. I never though I’d be espousing Lindsay Lohan’s lifestyle as a positive example to anyone, but it’s evident she knows a bit about troubled relationships exploding in the press. If Rihanna and Chris Brown are back together, that’s a toxic ticking time bomb.
I’ve held out for years that Lindsay would eventually get herself together, and interviews like this one make me just maybe possibly please-in-the-name-of-Mean-Girls believe I was right all along.
