6 HIV Patients Die After Evangelical Church Said They Were Healed
At least six people in Britain died after being told by their evangelical church that God would heal their HIV and they could stop taking their medication.
Apparently, several churches throughout England are claiming they can heal all kinds of illnesses through their prayer line, where people from all over Europe come to be cured. One pastor even claimed they have a 100% success rate.At the monthly prayer, patients must hand over a doctor’s letter as evidence of their condition, then they are filmed giving a before and after testimony (which is used on the church’s website). The so-called healing process then involves the pastor shouting over the person being healed for the devil to come out of their body, while spraying water in their face. Patients are then told that they can stop taking their medication and are free to start a family and continue with their lives because they are free from disease.
But not all patients leave the prayer line believing they are healed. One pastor, Rachel Holmes said:She goes on to tell them that any recurring symptoms are simply the illness leaving the body. We’ve had people come back before saying, ‘Oh I’m not healed. The diarrhea I had when I had HIV, I’ve got it again’. I have to stop them and say, ‘No, please, you are free’.”
Obviously, this practice raises serious concerns with health officials. Former health secretary Lord Fowler, who led the HIV/Aids awareness campaign in the 1980s, said:
It is foolish advice and it is tragic advice because the consequences of this kind of advice can only be that people pass on HIV and can only be seriously bad for the individual concerned – including death.
One such patient, Emmanuel, stopped taking his medication a year ago after his pastor advised him to, but now believes he has passed on HIV to his boyfriend:
(The pastor) told me I’d been healed – ‘You’ve got to stop taking the medicine now. I’ll keep praying for you. Once God forgives you then the disease will definitely go.’
It’s hard to ignore some of the stories about patients who have been healed through evangelical methods, but, at the same time, it seems crazy to ignore your doctor’s advice and stop taking medications for a serious illness. Especially since some of these churches are very wealthy and make money from selling their “healing” water, books, CDs and other merchandise.
