5 Ways to Stay Productive When You’re Home Sick

Taken from here.

Despite your best efforts to wash your hands, stay hydrated, take your supplements, and avoid runny-nosed co-workers, it can still happen to you: you may just get sick this flu season. And whether you come down with an actual case of influenza, or just a very irritating bout of the common cold, the kindest thing to do is stay home and avoid the spread of disease. But unless you’re really, really eaten up, taking a sick day doesn’t have to mean spend 12 hours eating soup and dozing off in front of soap operas. Make the best of your time at home with these hints on staying productive:

1.) Rest. This may seem counter productive, but trying to do too much when you’re ailing is a recipe for more sick days. To cut back on time out of the office, do make sure to take it easy and get some extra sleep while you’re at home.

2.) Work if you can. If you’ve got a job that allows you to do some work from home, try to get some done. It will help keep it from piling up, and will keep your brain alert. You can also schedule a phone meeting or two, just to stay looped on what’s going on at work.

3.) Attend to the details. While you’re at home, try to get a few little things around the house done, too. By starting a load of dishes, putting a few bills in the mail, or tidying up some of the areas that tend to attract clutter, your home will feel less like a cave of disease, and more like a nice place to be while you recuperate.

4.) Stay in touch. Depending on what kind of work you do, being completely incommunicado when you’re sick can mean tasks and notes are piling up while you’re away–which is a stressful thought. Check your email once or twice throughout your sick day (but not constantly), just to afford yourself the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re not missing anything between naps.

5.) Move around. If you’re really, really sick, this isn’t a great idea. But if you’re feeling up to it, getting up and out can help get your blood circulating and give you a new burst of energy. And with the jolt that fresh, fall air will give you, you’ll be able to at least tolerate that over-the-phone meeting you scheduled.
