What Your Toilet Is Telling You About Your Health
Taken from here.
In today’s vital-but-gross discussion, we’re going to talk about your bowel movements. Did you know your bathroom “leave-behinds” can say a lot about your health? Specifically, they can let you know if you’re eating and digesting your food properly, which are two important components of optimal health. In order to keep tabs on how your body’s dealing with your diet, you should look at your stools each time you go—come on, you’ve done it before! And when you do take a gander , there are three important things you should pay attention to, according to Dr. Oz:
Consistency–For starters, the way your stool is formed is important. If it’s too tight with visible cracks, you could be dehydrated. If it’s too loose and watery, chances are you had an irritation or allergic reaction to something you ate.
Shape–Ideally, you want an S-shaped stool. If your stools sound more like plop-plop, that’s not good. “What you want to be is like a diver–a sinking submarine,” says Oz.
Color–Dark brown is preferable, and green can even be normal. If you stools are black and tar-like though, that could indicate some internal bleeding like an ulcer, and red could indicate hemorrhoids.
On a related note, when Dr. Oz once appeared on Oprah at one point, he said we should not be ashamed to pass gas! Did you know that the average person does so 14 times a day—and less than 1% of it actually smells? He is so matter of fact about this and says we should all create a “no embarrassment zone” and just pass that gas!
